Four things are small on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise: Prov 30:24
The ants are not a strong folk, but they prepare their food in the summer; Prov 30:25 – A strong work ethic is the lesson to learn – The sluggard had previously been exhorted Prov 6:6-8
Go to the ant, O sluggard, observe her ways and be wise, which, having no chief, officer or ruler, prepares her food in the summer, and gathers her provision in the harvest. Prov 6:6-8
The rock badgers are not mighty folk, yet they make their houses in the rocks; Prov 30:26 – The importance of having a home, providing shelter and a place of safety – Even unbelievers know this 1 Tim 5:8
But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever. 1 Tim 5:8
The locusts have no king, yet all of them go out in ranks; Prov 30:27 – The importance of unity, organization, and discipline – A mainstay in the Lord’s kingdom Eph 4:2-6
…with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. Eph 4:2-6
The spider you may grasp with the hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces. Prov 30:28 – The value of persistency…something so small can find a way into the grandest of places – A great example for saints Heb 4:14-16
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need. Heb 4:14-16
God is no less great today among us than when Agur wrote these words centuries ago. Thank you for coming to worship this great God with us today. May He be praised by what we do, and may we be the wiser for eternity’s sake.
