The Voice of New Zealand Survey Young people said to us When we are represented in the media, we are…
Drunk in Queen Street • Rioting in • Dunedin Unemployed! and un-motivated • Pregnant & on benefits (as a career choice) • An impending • obesity epidemic! • Employed • (but with unrealistic career expectations)
That is not what WE want to talk about! • That is not what WE want you to hear about!
We want YOU to know…. • We are either invisible or only too visible for `all the wrong reasons’ • We can’t vote but we still want a voice • We want to know about each other -what matters to us • We want to see ourselves on TV – the good things
We Are NOT RIGHT NOW “The FUTURE”
The Youthtown Voice of New Zealand Survey gives young Kiwis (13-18 years) the chance to tell us what is important to them
About the Survey • Strengths based: Kaupapa positive youth development • Support Youth Week theme - in 2013 ‘Live like a legend’ • Over 1000 young people (1194) responded • Online • Accessed youth panel, Youthtown website, other youth sites • Range of age, ethnicities, disabilities, regions (nationally representative) • Margin of error (+/- 3%)
Social connectedness is a strong predictor of adult wellbeing Most of us are connected to friends… 88%young people have a friend who really cares about them 82%young people have a friend who they can talk to when they are having a hard time 81% young people have a friend who believes they will be a success …but some of us are not
Do we have opportunities to make friends? • More than ¾ of young people believe they have enough opportunities to make friends and hang out with friends. • Two out of 10of us however feel there is nowhere to go if we want to just hang out with our friends.
So where do we want to hang out? “If we hang out together at the beach or park – we get a visit from the cops.” Friends places (82%) & Home (68%) Are the preferred places to hang out
Having good relationships with adults is an important protective factor • Lots of young people do not really have anyone (friends, family or adults in their lives) they can talk to when they are having a hard time Most of us have adults in our lives who really care about us • This is unchanged since 2012 How are we going to change this?
We have lots to offer the world • There has been a slight fall in both indicators between 2012 and 2013 91% believe they have a purpose in life (94% in 2012) 89% believe they have a lot to offer the world (93% in 2012)
We would like to do more We already volunteer About another 1/3 of us About 1/3 of us • Tree Planting, volunteering at the SPCA • Gardening for the RSA rest homes • Mentoring Programmes • Helping within Girl Guiding • Coaching at holiday programmes • Helping out at events • food shelters, opshops, clean ups • I helped out at swimming events like the special Olympics and interschool primary competitions
What is stopping us? Lack of time Don’t know where to start
We are strongly • values driven • Qualities we admire in our friends are… • Loyalty • Honesty • Trustworthiness • Supportiveness • Dependability • Caring
Sports Stars • Musicians • Actors We look up to… • TV Stars • We admire their skill, success, intelligence and perseverance
But who actually influences us? Parents, Friends & Family are the biggest influencers Girls are slightly more likely to be influenced by our friends than boys
Our Teen years are when we begin to make decisions about our careers … And we are worried!
Most of us know what we are good at (our talents) Over one-third do not Half of us know what job or career we want. Only four out of ten of us think we have had useful career counselling. Three quarters of us are worried about getting a job Half of us have a plan to achieve their future career Two-thirds of us are concerned about being able to get a job we want • Half of us need more help • We are being held back by self-doubt
Where do we see our ? 10% DO NOT see a future for themselves in NZ Around 13% of young people definitely see a future in
What attracts us overseas? What would bring us home? Adventure More opportunities and jobs would make NZ an even better place to live and tempt us home Travel Better Work Opportunities Higher Salaries
What are the biggest challenges facing Young People? • Educational achievement • Money and finances are the biggest issues facing our immediate world (family, neighbourhood or community). • Money and the economy is the biggest issue currently facing NZ • War and violence are the biggest issues facing the world • To make the world a better place, young people believe we need more equality and acceptance of each other
What matters to Young People? • Asked us to listen • How are we going to respond? • Safe opportunities to hang out • Adults in their lives (Coaches, Mentors) • Career Support • Opportunities in New Zealand so that they • see a future here
