Chapter Headings • Overview of Chapter • Especially useful in story-driven Old Testament (and to skip over boring chapters)
Italicized Words in the Bible • Inserted by the translator to give a correct English reading • No way to do a direct translation • Example: “Ich bin ein Berliner” • Why doesn’t the Book of Mormon have these?
Footnotes • Bible was written in a different time • Some words were not even around yet. • HEB – Hebrew meaning • OR – Synonyms • IE – Explanations • “tell the stars” means “count the stars”
The Joseph Smith Translation • Joseph Smith began translating the Bible in 1830. Continued through until his death, never finished. • Bible contains over 600 versus changed, but not everything. • Longer translations are either in the Pearl of Great Price (Moses, JS-Matthew), or in the Appendix.
Topical Guide • Like the “Google” of the scriptures. Sorted by Topics with references • Great place to start when preparing a talk, or preparing to study the scriptures. • Related: Index to the Triple Combination. Useful to distinguish people and places
Bible Dictionary • Excellent source of information about people, places, and topics. The “Wikipedia” of the Bible (also useful: Wikipedia) • Special topics • “Chronology” – Compares Bible events to historical events • “Gospels, Harmony of” – Plots events of Christ’s life through 4 gospels • “Quotations” – Where the Old Testament is quoted in the New Testament • “Weights and Measures” – List of weights and measures mentioned in the Bible
Maps and Photographs • Pretty Self-Explanatory • New version since 1999 • Beginning has an Index of place names and map coordinates
Pronouncing Guide • Back of the Book of Mormon, right before the Doctrine and Covenants. • Book of Mormon names only. Why?
