Introduction to Light Beer Feasibility Study • A recent survey by Alcohol101plus.org indicated that 72% of college students drank alcohol within the last 30 days, and 84% drank alcohol within the last year • The National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) reports the average income for a college student is $14,400 • Today’s college student is resourceful with money, but not at the expense of taste and dietary concerns • This study will evaluate the 5 bestselling US domestic light beers: Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite, Natural Light, and Busch Light.
Evaluation Methods • Our team evaluated the 5 bestselling US domestic light beers using the following criteria: • Average price per 6-pack of 12 oz. cans • Taste Preference Survey • Calories per serving • Alcohol Content (APV) • Carbohydrates per serving • Awards received from reputable contests • Our team obtained the average price per 6-pack of 12 oz. cans while visiting all national retail grocery and gas stations within a 5-mile radius of the University of North Texas campus. • Our team only surveyed participants over the age of 21. The participants judged each light beer based on taste preference. The Taste Preference Survey utilized a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 representing the most preferred light beer. • Reelbeer.com provided the alcohol content (APV) for each light beer. • The light beer container provided all nutritional information regarding calories and carbohydrates per serving. • The World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival Awards allow the world’s greatest brewers and beers to compete for medals. The events display diverse beers, making craft brewing one of the fastest-growing segments of the alcohol spirits industry. Our team considered awards from these organizations for our evaluation.
Conclusion • Our team evaluated all light beers using the following criteria: • Natural light has the cheapest average price per 6-pack of 12 oz. cans • Miller Light won the Taste Preference Survey • Bud Light, Natural Light, and Busch Light have the lowest calories per serving • Alcohol content is the same in all beers except Busch Light (.1% lower) • Miller Light, Natural Light, and Busch Light all have the lowest carbohydrates per serving • Coors Light won the most Awards from reputable contests • Our studies show that Miller Lite performed the best versus the other four beers in 3 of the 5 categories. Miller Lite rated highest in our taste preference survey with a total score of 95 of a possible 140. • Event planners will benefit from the information presented in the study. This study provides event planners the most cost effective light beer for drinking age college students.
