  1. 1-1 computer initiative South Winn Middle School 12-14-09 Proposal School board passed 12-14-09

  2. transformation • Kaplan video • Where we were and current reality • Bread and butter analogy + honey • Proposed each student grade 5-8 have a laptop computer to use at school all day and take home each night.

  3. Existing MS teacher technology expertise

  4. All 5-8 teachers have been using technology and web-based materials for teaching, learning, and for assessment to determine learning needs. All staff are in the second full year of 1:1 Teacher/Laptop Initiative. Staff have web pages and are using technology to communicate with parents

  5. Build on current Middle School focus on Teaching & Learning. Formative Assessment (Skills Iowa) Initiative. • Currently in second full year • Research-based instructional practice guaranteed to improve student learning when implemented with fidelity.

  6. Build on current Middle School focus on Teaching & Learning. • Ties in with Five Effective Instructional Practices of the Iowa Core Curriculum and corresponding research-based professional development initiatives which MS staff have been working towards for the past two years. • Student-centered Classrooms (IDM Model – two years). • Teaching for Understanding (ESC – two years; Skills Iowa – two years; Nancy Lockett Professional Development). • Assessment for Learning (Skills Iowa – two years; ESC – two years; IDM Model – two years). • Rigorous & Relevant Instruction (Nancy Locket; Skills Iowa – two years; ESC – two years). • Teaching for Learner Differences (ESC – two years; Skills Iowa – two years; Co-Teaching Model – three years; IDM Model – two years).

  7. IOWA CORE tie-in • Develop Twenty-first Century Skills, e.g., creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, and ability to manipulate information for a variety of purposes, particularly since Iowa is one of the fourteen 21st Century Skills Leadership States.

  8. STEM initiative • Science • Technology • Engineering • Mathmatics • Best example: First Lego League On to State-Jan 16th

  9. Promote student engagement with learning Visits to North Winn and Van Meter Not able to tell regular education or special education Not able to tell which subject area-involved in integrated projects Absent students “skyped” or “ichat” into class Middle schoolers took ownership and pride into their computer and were engaged in the care, less problems and promotes responsibility Promotes equity by providing equal access to information 24/7 for all students.

  10. Serve as the District pilot project for subsequent expansion to other grade levels because: • 1) Middle school staff are in the second full year of key research-based professional development initiatives designed to improve both teaching and learning. • 2) Qualitative research studies indicate that middle school students take greater ownership and responsibility for laptops than do students at other levels. • 3) The existing building design favors lower start-up costs for a 1:1 wireless environment. • 4) Being in the middle permits expansion in two directions, both to lower and upper grades in subsequent years once the implementation bugs are worked out and once evaluation of the 1:1 computer/student initiative demonstrates it is a worthwhile initiative.

  11. Progress to Date • Several meetings have been held with DE and AEA consultants to use the Microsoft Settlement dollars to partially fund the project. • An initial plan was presented to the District Technology Committee where it was fully discussed and revised. The District Technology Committee has recommended that the current plan be presented to the Board for implementation beginning the 2010-2011 school year. • MS staff, administration, & SW technology consultants have visited the following schools which currently have a heavy technology focus: • George Washington Carver, Waterloo Community Schools. • North Winneshiek CSD. • Van Meter CSD. • District & AEA technology staff met with an Apple representative.
