  9. LIBERAS, SINCE 2nd USERS MEETING - Not much ... that’s why I’m showing you other stuff  - Two units (not really used) during LINAC pre-commissioning (release 1.8) Peak detector on Device Server for position calculation LINAC synchronization problem

  10. LIBERAS, SINCE 2nd USERS MEETING - Development of a generic Matlab GUI for 2.0 Used for Lab testing of new SW releases

  11. OUTLINE • ALBA OVERVIEW • LIBERAS, SINCE 2nd USERS MEETING • ALBA FAST ORBIT FEEDBACK • BEAM POSITION MONITORS • RF CABLES • LIBERA ELECTRONICS • FOFB NETWORK • CORRECTION CALCULATION • POWER CONVERTERS • CORRECTOR MAGNETS

  12. ALBA FAST ORBIT FEEDBACK FOFB network BPM readout electronics Beam Position Monitors Correctors Power Converters (PC) Correctors magnets Correction CPUs

  13. ALBA FAST ORBIT FEEDBACK FOFB network BPM readout electronics Beam Position Monitors Correctors Power Converters (PC) Correctors magnets Correction CPUs

  14. BEAM POSITION MONITORS Beam Position Monitor block On chamber welded block including 4 button-type feedthroughs Feedthroughs and BPM blocks tested during different stages at factory and at site

  15. BEAM POSITION MONITORS Buttons measurements at factory (FMB) 1- After manufacturing + Check manufacturing process + Calculate electrical behavior + Sort the buttons before welding TDR head for reflection measurement 2- After welding on the BPM block + Prove that buttons are OK 3- After baking of the chambers + Final OK before delivery Capacitance Dispersion < 1%

  16. BEAM POSITION MONITORS BPMs Electrical Offset measurement at site - Offset due to non perfect buttons and their placement in the block holes - Measured by external means. No wired method possible S-paremeters measurement using a 4-ports network analyzer

  17. BEAM POSITION MONITORS BPMs Electrical Offset measurement at site Processing of Tx coefficients H/V offsets Booster case Max offset kept below 150 µm

  18. ALBA FAST ORBIT FEEDBACK FOFB network BPM readout electronics Beam Position Monitors Correctors Power Converters (PC) Correctors magnets Correction CPUs

  19. RF CABLES - First stage of semi-rigid PEEK dielectric cables being installed (as Soleil case) Tight space between magnets makes impossible to plug any cable without a pre-stage After chamber bakeout Chamber movement on top of half-opened magnets

  20. RF CABLES - RF cables from the semi-rigids to the Liberas are on the way of production - 4 Andrew CNT-240 cables in a hosepipe (Copy+Paste cheap version of the commonly used Time Microwave LMR-240) - 5000m of cable ordered. Assembly of SMA connector to be done by cabling company

  21. LIBERA ELECTRONICS - As said, not much has happened - Last tested software release was 1.82 (the one on the installed units) - Release 2.0 installed on 3 units but not yet tested - Matlab GUI for 2.0 developed but not really used - About TANGO device server ... still “forking” on others job - Small pseudo-server developed for LINAC beam peaks analysis - HW installation of 120 Storage Ring units on the Service Area done - Only 12 of the 28 Booster units installed. The others kept for Lab testing - Report of failures/interventions: Corrected + Hardware patch (30). Ethernet cable length... Not corrected + Wrong voltages (8) ... not used on Libera + Out of specs on BCM (2) + Noisy channel (1) + Out of specs on TbT rms, low # ADCs (2) + PM buffer not triggered (1)

  22. ALBA FAST ORBIT FEEDBACK FOFB network BPM readout electronics Beam Position Monitors Correctors Power Converters (PC) Correctors magnets Correction CPUs

  23. FOFB NETWORK Distributed architecture using 4 racks per sector (NT, Diagnostics, Controls, PCs)

  24. FOFB NETWORK Topology based on the use of network spare optical fibers to Sector 09

  25. FOFB NETWORK Patch panel on Sector 09 will allow any combination of interconnections

  26. ALBA FAST ORBIT FEEDBACK FOFB network BPM readout electronics Beam Position Monitors Correctors Power Converters (PC) Correctors magnets Correction CPUs

  27. CORRECTION CALCULATION - Distribution of data using Diamond Communication Controller internally agreed few weeks ago (discussions since who knows when) - We will pay ITech for the integration job in our design - Original plan was to use MicroResearch reading board + distributed processing CPUs - Pentium M running Linux 2.6 already installed but “under investigation” - Not possibility of DMA on MicroResearch boards turns us to look for other solutions  VMETRO? ... Tell me!!!! - Correction done with widely used SVD algorithm + PID controller

  28. CORRECTION CALCULATION - Even though we have 120 BPMs and their corresponding Libera electronics, only position data from 88 BPMs will be used for orbit correction  Why? - Representation of βfunctions vs. phase advance shows that some BPMs give almost the same information (same info = no info) - BPMs are better distributed according the vertical plane  were more precision is needed

  29. ALBA FAST ORBIT FEEDBACK FOFB network BPM readout electronics Beam Position Monitors Correctors Power Converters (PC) Correctors magnets Correction CPUs

  30. Power converter POWER CONVERTERS Diamond I/V transducer ADC PSI Controller RS232 service port Correctos PCs rack ALBA Controls rack • Provide ±1mrad of DC deflection and ±40µrad @ 100Hz • Resolution of 18 bits • OCEM-Diamond PCs Tx Board Electrical  Optical Optical IP modules Optical protocol management Correction Calculation CPU Tested at factory but not yet delivered Carrier Commercial cPCI Bus

  31. CORRECTOR MAGNETS Horizontal Steering Vertical Steering - ALBA sextupoles have extra coils to provide H/V beam steering - All delivered and on installation process - Eddy currents on the vacuum chamber reduce the effect of the magnetic field at high frequencies FOFB limiting factor fH=235 Hz fV=1550 Hz - Chamber thickness reduction to 2mm in the correctors

  32. WHAT’S NEXT? - LTB, BTS and BOOSTER BPMs electrical offset measured - Half of the Storage Ring BPMs still pending. Measurement goes together with installation - On site measurement of RF cables lengths (by cabling company)  connec. assembly - All RF cables will be checked after installation one by one - Test Libera release version 2.03 in the Lab (probably our production version) - Develop graphical utilities for Booster and Storage commissionings - Take decisions about “sniffer” boards and processing CPUs - Receive and test the correctors power converters - Implement an small FOFB in the lab before final installation LINAC full commissioning by Sep-Oct 09 Storage Ring commissioning May-10 Booster commissioning right after LINAC
