July 11, 2006 6LoWPAN Meeting66 IETF MontrealLow Power Mesh Networks
Low Power Mesh Network • Completely Battery Operated Networks • No mains/line powered devices • FFDs (routing devices) battery powered • All nodes can/will sleep
Application • Interconnected smoke detectors • Tank level monitoring • Sensor nets with infrequent/event reporting • Temporary power outages
The Issue • Current Problem Document (requirements doc) aimed at hybrid networks • Line Powered FFDs with battery/line RFDs • Low Power Mesh networks may require specific mesh network layer support • Proactive vs Reactive routing • Table vivify • Entry timeouts • WG decision should take into account
Modify Problem Statement Doc • Paragraph ChangeWhile some LoWPAN devices are expected to be extremely limited (the so-called "Reduced Function Devices" or RFDs), more capable "Full Function Devices" (FFDs) will also be present, albeit in much smaller numbers. FFDs will typically have more resources and be mains powered. Accordingly, FFDs will aid RFDs by providing functions such as network coordination, packet forwarding, interfacing with other types of networks, etc. While some LoWPAN devices are expected to be extremely limited (the so-called "Reduced Function Devices" or RFDs), more capable "Full Function Devices" (FFDs) will also be present, albeit in much smaller numbers.
