What does it look like? Copy out figure 3.12 p38 into your books. Make sure you include the labels.
How is it worked out? • Sphere of influence – this is the area served by the settlement. It can also be called the catchment area or hinterland • Range and Number of services – the different amount and type of services that are available in that settlement. • ADD FIG 3.13 TO THE SIDE OF YOUR SETTLEMENT HIERARCHY DIAGRAM

How else? The range of a good – This means the maximum distance people are prepared to travel to use a shop or service. Population Size – the more people the higher up the settlement hierarchy. However precise numbers are difficult to apply in different countries
