  1. Settlement Hierarchy Aim: To find out what settlement hierarchy is and how it is ordered.

  2. What does it look like? Copy out figure 3.12 p38 into your books. Make sure you include the labels.

  3. How is it worked out? • Sphere of influence – this is the area served by the settlement. It can also be called the catchment area or hinterland • Range and Number of services – the different amount and type of services that are available in that settlement. • ADD FIG 3.13 TO THE SIDE OF YOUR SETTLEMENT HIERARCHY DIAGRAM

  4. How else? 3. The Threshold Population. How many people do you need to live in a settlement to support? Village shop Primary school Shoe shop Medium sized store Supermarket

  5. How else? The range of a good – This means the maximum distance people are prepared to travel to use a shop or service. Population Size – the more people the higher up the settlement hierarchy. However precise numbers are difficult to apply in different countries
