Types of Windows • Desktop/Explorer Windows • Application Windows • Dialog Windows All Windows have the same “look and feel” with common programming features
Desktop—Special Explorer Windows • Appear when you double click a disk or folder icon • Notice: • Title bar • Menu bar • Standard Toolbar • Address and Links Toolbars
Windows Explorer • Content or Topic Pane • Double click to open Tree • Different views • Explorer Pane (click “Folders” to open) • Tree hierarchical structure • Single click to navigate
Windows Explorer • Provides a graphical view of all local and networked resources • Can be used to copy move rename and search for files and folders • Start Menu • Programs/Accessories • Right click on Start • Select Explorer • Windows Key + E (best)
Application Windows • Appear when you are working of a document or in a program, such as Windows Explorer or IE • Notice: • Explorer Pane • Content Pane • Scroll bar • Status bar • Borders
Dialog Boxes • Allow user interaction with OS or App Properties • System Properties • Windows key + Break • Display Properties • Right click on the icon, select “property” from the drop down menu and a “property” box appears to change program/folder settings
Advanced… • You can use Group Policy utility (gpedit.msc) to adjust settings for the desktop, control panel, etc. Enter gpedit.msc from the command prompt Run -> gpedit.msc

Inserting the Hardware… • PnP/Non PnP the same • Remove Power and Cover • Insert card in expansion slot • Replace Power and Cover
Installation of PnP Devices • Automatic: • Detection of hardware • Allocation of resources • Loading of driver • Windows XP will work out conflicts and assign resources based on availability • If driver can not be found – asks for manufactures disk
Installation of Non PnP Devices My Computer (Right click) > Properties > Hardware > Add Hardware Wizard • Windows not able to detect Legacy devices • Manual detection using Add Hardware Wizard • Automatic: • Allocation of resources • Loading of driver
Add Hardware Wizard Add Hardware Wizard is also used to: • install PnP devices that were not detected (rare) • troubleshoot a device My Computer (Right click) > Properties > Hardware > Add Hardware Wizard
Confirming Installation of Device Right Click > My Computer > Manage > Device Management or Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager • Use Device Manager Working properly Not working properly No icon to display orMay not be working Not working/disabled
Troubleshooting Procedures My system won’t start. What do I do?
Boot Problems • Press F8 as during Windows Flash screen to go to the Advanced Start up Options • Safe Mode – minimal drivers to diagnose and fix a problem • Last Known Good Configuration – XP stores the last good boot sequence
Roll Back Driver • Right click on the item in Device Manager • Select Properties • Click the Drivers Tab • Select Roll Back Driver

Troubleshooting Strategy • When did the problem first occur? • Did the device work previously? • If yes? What changed? • Check current hardware/software settings • If changed– Restore to original values • If not – Check Readme files for a cause • Devise ways to test possible causes • Use all available HELP resources
