What is altered state of consciousness? • Definitions for an altered state of consciousness can vary depending on the source. • Usually the disconnection between the mind and body or the self perceived psychologically
Drugs • Psychoactive drugs • Alcohol • Stimulants • Marijuana • Cocaine
How do drugs alter consciousness? • Are mind altering substances • Activate dopamine receptors and interferes with memory • Interfere with reuptake of dopamine • Activates cannabinoid receptors, enhanced mental activity, memory impairment, and altered pain perception • Prevents reuptake of dopamine and affects confidence alertness and sociability
Alcohol • Alcohol is the most abused drug of them all • Men consume more than woman because- body size
Waking and Sleeping • The states of waking and sleeping are experienced daily by people everyday, however they are very different for every person. • Some people experience state between waking and sleeping and there are some people who get vid hallucinations in this state.
What is Dreaming? • Dreaming involves a state which is physiologically and psychologically different from deep sleep.
Sleep Disorders • Insomnia • Sleep Apnea • Narcolepsy • Restless Legs Syndrome • Sleepwalking • Night Terror
How do some sleep disorders affect consciousness? • While Sleepwalking someone is still in their other consciousness of sleep. • Are physically active when sleepwalking.
Lucid Dreaming • State of Dreaming while aware • Influence their dreams and events • Do what they can’t do in reality
Meditation • Some people from different cultures believe they an enter a state where they can travel the universe, world, and see visions with meditation
The Third Eye • The third eye is believed to be controlled by the pineal gland because of the pineal gland pinecone shape has a reference to all religions and things all around the world • Believed to use for visions and travel
How does meditation affect consciousness? • Although there is no proof of actually traveling and being able to see visions, there is proof that it puts you in a different state of consciousness. • Meditation does have extra health benefits
How does one meditate? • Establish a Daily Sitting Practice • Choose a home base—a primary anchor or subject of meditation. • Develop concentration • Sustain a Meditation Practice
Other ways to alter consciousness • Binaural Beats • Hypnotism • Biofeedback
