  2. College Affordability: Average Cost of Higher Education (per year) • CSU-($13,000 -- $23,000) • UC-($24,000 -- $29,000) • Private Schools- ($25,000 -- $60,000)

  3. Student Financial Need • Cost of Attendance: College Budget per year (education, housing, transportation, & personal). • Estimated Family Contribution: Based on federal formula. Cost of Attendance • Expected Family Contribution _____________________________ = Financial Need

Types of Financial Aid • GRANTS (Free Money) • Federal Pell Grant • State Cal Grant • State University Grant at CSU - Priority is given to undergraduate students who have an EFC between 0-1000. • FEE WAIVERS: The Cal Vet Tuition Fee Waiver: Veteran Dependents waives mandatory system-wide tuition at CSU or UC in lieu of other state aid. • SCHOLARSHIPS (Free Money) • LOANS (must be paid back)

  5. Scholarships • Merit or Need based scholarships(academic performance or financial need) • Deadlines will vary • Application Process: Application, personal statement, letter of recommendation, and official transcripts. Final interview may apply.

  9. Eligibility for Federal Student Aid • U.S. citizen/eligible non-citizen • Social Security Number • H.S. diploma, CHSPE, GED, Ability to Benefit Test, ATB-C • Financial need(Estimated Family Contribution) • Selective Service (males only) • Degree or Certificate program

  10. GRANTS WORK STUDY LOANS Federal Student Aid Includes:

  11. Federal Pell Grant and Federal SEOG Grant • Automatically considered for a Pell Grant. • Grant Award based on Estimated Family Contribution: • Pell awards up to $5,775 per year (full time enrollment). • SEOG awards vary from $100 to $4000 per year depending on Financial Need

  12. National TEACH Grant The TEACH Grant can help you pay for college if you plan to become a teacher in a high-need field in a low-income area. Up to $4,000/year for 3rd & 4th year college students Eligibility Requirements: Must file FAFSA and be a Pell eligible US Citizen or Permanent Resident. 2015–16 TEACH Grant first disbursed before Oct. 1, 2016, the maximum award of $4,000 is reduced by 6.8 percent ($272), resulting in a maximum award of $3,728.

  13. Federal Work Study Grants • Part-time job on or off campus. • Part of Financial Aid Package • May work 12 - 24 hours per week, depending on college policy. • Obtain experience in career-related field or community service.

  14. Federal Student Loans • Dept. Of Education oversees Student Loan Program • Must be repaid with interest and fees • Federal Direct Loan Program • Current Interest rate for Undergraduates is 4.29% • Maximum loan amounts for students: • 30+ units = $4,500 - $6,500 Dependent Students • 30+ units = $4,500 - $10,500 Independent Students • Parent Loans vary – Direct Parent Plus Loan Interest rate is currently 6.84%

Eligible students whose families are making $100,000 to $150,000 per year. % Discount is income dependent.

  21. How to Apply for Cal Grants? • Submit FAFSA or Dream Act by March 2nd • Or Complete GPA Form: Name, SSN, address, & signature. Take form to Admissions to certify GPA and mail to CSAC before March 2. • Gavilan sends electronic GPA for all students who have completed 18+ units before March 2 • Update Webgrants account to school of enrollment Check with Financial Aid Office at your school to see if you are on their roster!

  23. Understanding Your Award Letter Schools offer an appeal process for Financial Aid. This is called a Request for Professional Judgment. If you or your family’s financial situation has changed due to divorce, death, illness or unemployment, you should consider this option.
