Allergy- a specific reaction of the immune system to a foreign and usually harmless substance called an allergen. • Histamines- chemicals that can stimulate mucus and fluid production. Managing asthma • Monitor the condition- recognize the warning signs • Manage environment- avoid exposure to allergens • Manage stress • Take medication properly
Diabetes • Chronic disease that affects the way body cells convert sugar into energy • 2 types • Symptoms: frequent urination, thirst, tingling in hands/feet, sores that are slow to heal, sudden vision changes, frequent fatigue, unexplained weight loss
Type 2 Diabetes • Is known as an autoimmune disease- a condition in which the immune mistakenly attacks itself, targeting the cells, tissues, and organs of a person’s own body. • Gestational Diabetes- temporary situation due to pregnancy
Treatment of diabetes • Medication • Monitor diet • Participate in regular physical activity
Arthritis- cause pain and loss of movement of the joints • Osteoarthritis- disease of the joints in which cartilage breaks down. In time it may wear completely causing bones to rub against each other. • Rheumatoid Arthritis- characterized by the debiltating destruction of the joints due to inflammation. 3 times more common in women than in men. Symptoms first appear between ages of 20 and 50. It is an autoimmune disease. Effects are usually symmetrical.
