Two Truths and a Lie • Here are the rules: • Think of two things that are true about yourself, and 1 thing that is a lie. • Tell your group. They will all guess which is the lie based on what they know about you. • If you can get them to guess wrong, you win!
Andras • Which one is it? • I have been to 14 different countries. • I can surf. • I can have a teaching certificate to teach Chinese.
Ruey-Ying • Which one is a lie? • I have a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in psychology. • I run marathons. • I was a TV extra when I was in Taiwan.
Bucket List • What is this? • Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc3mkG21ob4
Make a Bucket List • What are some things you haven’t done, but you want to? • I never jumped from a plane. • → I wish I had jumped from a plane. • I never have been married. • → I wish I had married somebody. • Make a statement about the past. • → try to convert it to a “wish” statement (past) • I wish I had studied French in France. (had + pp)
#6 p 121 • Let’s try this: • Read the directions • Choose some of the topics (school, work, ect.) and make a dialogue with your partner • Don’t forget to explain why!!
HW Check • Two ways! • #4 • I wish I hadn’t wrecked my brand new car. I wish I hadn’t ran the stop sign. OR I wish I hadn’t ran the stop sign and wrecked my brand new car. WHAT!? MORE!!!!!???? I wish I hadn’t wrecked my car by running the stop sign.
#4 p 121 2. I wish I had taken my first job more seriously and not lost it. 3. I wish I hadn’t spent the money I invested on nothing. 4. I wish I was more flexible and hadn’t gotten divorced. 5. I wish I hadn’t sold my old records when I needed some money. 6. I wish I hadn’t moved away and lost track of my old friends.
Gramma’ Time • Wishing in the past • Similar to wishing in the present, but make it a had + past participle ! • I wish I had (not) eaten all that food! • There are other ways too.
But first. • Think about the situation, then make the wish. • Situation: She couldn’t go out with her friends because she had too much homework. • Wish: She wishes she could have gone out.
I wish I had been able to see that movie. • I wish I could have seen that movie. • I wish I would have seen that movie…. • Uh oh. Could/would is back.
Can = are able to… so! • Could = were able to. • I can make pancakes. • I am able to make pancakes. • I could have (had the ability) made pancakes! • Would = general past action
I wish they could not talk. • I wish they would not talk.
Listening • Recognizing speakers’ roles • Identify a speaker’s position, job, or function in a particular situation. • Helps you understand more fully why and how the speakers communicate • ...Isn’t it something everyone does without thinking?
Let’s try! • Let’s look at a clip from “Paris, je t’aime”. • There will be some French, but it comes with English subtitles. • You will see a man and a woman. Focus on their conversation and try to figure out what their relationship is.
What is the relationship between the man and the woman? How do you know? • Who is Gaspard? How do you know? • Let’s find out!
