Goals • Understand some of the seminal results in the area of distributed systems • Understand some interesting recent work • Get involved in research by doing a project CS 545: Distributed Systems
Structure • Will run somewhat like a seminar • Have a text book but may not depend on it too much • Andrew Tanenbaum and Maarten van Steen. Distributed Systems: Principles and Paradigms. Prentice Hall. • It’s up to you whether you want to buy the book • Web will have a list of other good books • Wasn’t happy with any of 4-5 books so decided to put together a reading list instead • Students are responsible for most of the presentations • Auditors are welcome but must read papers and participate CS 545: Distributed Systems
Requirements • Presentation • Expect about 2 (perhaps 3, depending on enrollment) • Read and summarize papers before lecture • Summaries will be posted on • Participation • To pass, you must document 3 times that a comment, or question from you led to a significant discussion during class • Project • May be related to outside research but must be only for this class • Final exam CS 545: Distributed Systems
Grading • 50% project • 25% final • 25% presentations • 0% summaries and class discussion • Automatic I if do not summarize 75% of papers before class • Auditing students must submit summaries • Automatic I if cannot document participation convincingly CS 545: Distributed Systems
Logistics • Mailing list: dcs_545@email.rutgers.edu • If you are registered for the course, you will be added to the list automatically • If you are auditing, you can send me email if you want to be on the list • Not sure how useful a newsgroup would be so won’t create one unless we decide we want one • Most papers will be available from the web • http://paul.rutgers.edu/cs545/S02 • Will send a username and password to access papers CS 545: Distributed Systems
Topics • See web page CS 545: Distributed Systems
Presentations • Amount of time is up to you • Two week-days before your presentation is due, you must give me an estimate of how long your presentation will take • Slides are due for posting on the web by 7am class day • Grading will not be based on how long or short your presentation is. It will be based on how good of a job you do in (a) meeting the time you estimated, and (b) covering the critical points of the paper • I will have read the papers two week-days before class day to go over your presentation with you if you wish CS 545: Distributed Systems
Project • Project should lead to a workshop quality paper • Can work in teams of 2-3 • The more people, the more results I will expect • Will have descriptions of some potential ideas up on the web by end of next week • However, you are ultimately responsible for finding an interesting project • I will be available as a consultant CS 545: Distributed Systems
Project Schedule • 2/26/02: project proposal due • 4/2/02: interim report due • 5/6/02: final report due CS 545: Distributed Systems
Class Time and Office Hour • Let’s choose some times … • I will be gone 2/4-2/6 so if class is M-W, I will miss this week CS 545: Distributed Systems
