By the end of today, you will... • Have a greater understanding of Muslim and BME women and how to engage them in sporting activities • Understand the importance of a female-only atmosphere • Know how to make a venue female-only
What is a female only environment? • An area with no male access or viewing, e.g. Windows and doors are closed off to the general public • Female participants • Female coach / instructor • Female officials • Female point of contact (ideally) • No filming or photography (mobile phones)
What might prevent BME women from being involved in sport? • Previous experience • Confidence & skill level • Family commitments • Cultural considerations • Access and travel • Time of session
Getting Started • Word of mouth • Groups of friends – community groups • Posters should be detailed, advertising the female only environment • It can take up to 12 weeks for the numbers to be steady – allow for this! • Direct contact with interested participants
Creating a Lasting Programme • Instructor / coach is the key for setting the tone – positive reinforcement and encouragement • Incorporate activities that encourage interaction between participants – encourage friendships • Create a group bond / sense of belonging so that the ladies feel part of something • Make everyone feel welcome and a valued member of the group • Speak to each newcomer personally after their first session
