Summer Desertification Programme Environmental problem solving for sustainable development W A T E R N E T • Started in 1992 with funding from SIDA • 4/11 SDP’s focused on water SDP 2 - How is water from the Kuiseb Basin used by the different stakeholders? SDP 8 - How much water flows through the upper, middle and lower Kuiseb River Basin and how much is required to maintain essential services?
Summer Desertification Programme Environmental problem solving for sustainable development W A T E R N E T SDP 9 - What is the influence of farm dams on water balance in the Kuiseb River Basin? SDP 10 - What would be the effects of using the Etaka canal to provide water to livestock in the southern Cuvelai Delta?
General objectives of SDP SDP participants • understand research and develop the necessary skills • can plan and implement project independently • show positive attitude towards learning, research and team work • apply research as tool for environmental problem solving • have clearer orientation about personal career development W A T E R N E T • plan, implement and document a focused SDP course implemented and documented • reporte results orally in a professional manner to an appropriate, selected audience
Basin Management • DRFN is facilitating the establishment of Basin Management Committees in the Kuiseb Basin • DRFN is looking at starting the same in Omaruru and • Swakop Basins • These ephemeral basins offer opportunities for research on water and its related resources • Stakeholders in the Kuiseb Basin are keen on sharing • information and welcomes new ideas W A T E R N E T • Would provide opportunities for • students to be exposed to water • use/constraints and management • in Namibia
Gobabeb and DRFN (opportunities) • Climate variability and biodiversity • Rainfall, fog & flood events and vegetation response • Woody plant regeneration and groundwater availability • Groundwater recharge and tree growth and production • Appropriate water use and recycle • Solar energy and water heating • Exploring the possibility of wind energy • Use of local building materials W A T E R N E T
Networking Partners of DRFN and Gobabeb centre • NGOs & researchers:local, regional, international • Grinnell College • Global Water Partnership • Noragric, Norway • Various government ministries • Donors • Private sector W A T E R N E T The extensive DRFN network provides opportunities for guest lecturers, excursion module leaders, field attachments with staff & visiting researchers and much more
Needs and expectations from the course • Opportunities to take selected modules with WaterNet • Opportunities to participate in WaterNet degree programme • Opportunities to contribute WaterNet training in ways still to be identified • Opportunities to use Gobabeb centre and work in the Kuiseb Basin • Synergies between WaterNet and projects of DRFN and Gobabeb centre e.g. Environmental Learning and Action in the Kuiseb • Synergies between WaterNet and SDP approach to capacity building and environmental problem solving W A T E R N E T
