Behold: Law (Torah) • That which is handed down from superior to Inferior – God to Man • TEACHING– Recognition of God’s lovinkindness and good character – want His teaching (Psm. 119:12, 64, 68) • INSTRUCTION – How shall a young man cleanse His way? – overcoming lack of experience (Psm. 119:9, 98-100 cf. Prov. 7:7ff.) • DECISIONS – God has decided – I follow or Obey (Psm. 119:89, 106)
Whole Life Tied To God’s Law • Our Completeness (Psm. 119:1) • True Understanding – Total Commitment (v.34) • Life-Long Commitment (v. 44) • Antidote for falsehood – (v.29, 142) • Our Focus when persecuted (v.51,61,92,153) • Emotionally Affected (v.53,113,136, 163)
Whole Life Tied To God’s Law • Sense of Value – better than gold and silver (Psm. 119:72) • Source of Life (v. 77) • Delightful for meditation (v.97, 165) • Grounding for Life’s Uncertainties (v. 109) • Remembering God – Observe Law (v. 55)
Behold Law – Justifies, Frees and Gives Life • Law of Faith – in contrast to system of justification through works of law (Rom. 3:27) • Law To Christ – (I Cor. 9:21) • Law of the Spirit of Life (Rom. 8:2-3) • In connection with Christ • Revealed through Spirit (Jn. 16:13, 2 Cor. 3:6) • Gives Life – Through Christ • Gives Freedom from Sin Through Christ – freed from consequences of “law of sin and death” –through “law” (weak in flesh) (I Cor. 15:56, Rom. 3:9)
Behold: The Freedom To Serve • “For ye, brethren, were called for freedom; only use not your freedom for an occasion to the flesh, but through love be servants one to another” (Gal. 5:13). • Freedom from law of Moses (v.1) • Not a license to serve flesh • Serving Others – Manifesting fruit of the Spirit (v.16, 22-24)
Behold: The Grace In God’s Law • Woman caught in act of adultery (Jn. 8:10, Deut. 17:6) • Jesus merely opened his umbrella of grace to cover the woman’s sin? • Or, did Jesus apply law in his forgiving of sin? • “And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, ‘Woman where are they? Did no man condemn thee? . . . Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.” (Jn. 8:10-11)
Behold: The Grace In God’s Law • False Charge of Forbidding Marriage – Bound only till death of spouse (Rom. 7:2-3) • Guilty fornicator can never marry?? (Matt. 19:9) • Can only marry when spouse (to whom one is bound for life) dies. • One is not an adulteress if joined to another (Rom. 7:3)
