Organizational Approaches

1. Organizational Approaches In this PowerPoint, we will define four organizational approaches used in writing. We will also demonstrate how to apply each approach to one topic.

2. Organizational Approaches • Topic: Being a parent today is much more difficult than it was a generation ago. *Chronological *Spatial *Emphatic *Simple to Complex

3. Spatial Approach • In descriptive order such as from highest to lowest or vive versa giving a description of each in exact detail. • Works particularly well when writing about some thing physical -- a description – of a person or a building.

4. Spatial Approach - Application • How the community helped to raise a child and now the child has to raise his/her self because mom and/or dad has to work. • School, Church, Little League, Boy Scout and other community groups or activities.

5. Chronological Approach • Is an organizational approach that uses sequence materials that are arranged in a specific order or in order to accomplish a complete process. • Works particularly well when writing a narrative or something related to time and sequence

6. Chronological Approach -- Application • When using Chronological order we use technology as a huge factor parents have resources for educational material using the internet in the early 90’s to help teach their kids and in some cases using television. • A generation ago the internet was not in most homes. Parents educated their own children.

7. Emphatic Approach • Built in momentum that starts with the least important point and builds to the most significant. • Used in effective in argumentation-persuasion essays, in papers developed through examples, and in pieces involving comparison-contrast, division-classification, or casual analysis.

8. Emphatic Approach -- Application • Past • The mom was always at the house with the kids. • You could discipline your kids more in depth. • Family’s are more stable within the household. • Family ate at the dinner table and had more family time together. • Future • Now the mom and dad are both working and daycare is a must. • No spanking kids in public. You always have to worry about who is watching. • Not many dinner tables in homes. Family goes to their own comfortable place in the house. • Divorce rates are higher and kids have to go through the divorce with hard feelings.

9. Emphatic Approach (2) • Empathic approach is taking a topic and starting with the information that will have the smallest amount of impact and working up to the information with the largest amount of impact. • The main point to this approach is to save the most significant point for last.

11. Simple-to-Complex Approach • Used when explaining complex subjects to your readers so that they may follow. • Will start with most simple idea, gradually leading to the most complicated idea.

12. Simple-to-Complex Approach - Application • Being a parent today is much more difficult than it was a generation ago. The reasons for this include: change in values, discipline, family dynamics, technological advancement, and economic fluctuations. All of these lead to a less hands-on approach in modern day parenting.
