  2. Focus/Motivation • “The Communist China of today is not wholly a new China” (C.P. Fitzgerald, The China Giant) • What do you think this statement means? The Communist did not so much impose a new system on China as adapt Chinese ways of life to their philosophy • What are the traditional ways of Chinese life? Authoritarian rule, a scholarly ruling class, stress on education, fear of foreigners, fear of invasion from the north and desire to expand south

  3. Communist Control (pgs. 775-783) • In 1949 Mao Zedong established a Communist government on the Chinese mainland • Mao Zedong forced the nationalist to withdraw to the island of Taiwan • Mao initiated a series of five-year plans to raise industrial and agricultural production • After Mao's death in the late 1970s Chinese leaders included some aspects of free enterprise in the economic planning

  4. Foreign Affairs • China broke with the Soviet Union • China reestablished relations with the US • In the early 1950s North and South Korea fought an inclusive war • Many of the issues that caused the war still trouble the two Koreas today
