Carl Jung(1875 – 1961) • Early follower of Freud • Later broke away • Didn’t identify specific stages • Believed people gradually develop different levels of introversion or extraversion and tendencies like thinking vs. feeling • Split unconscious into 2 parts: • Personal unconscious • “Collective Unconscious” • Contains memories and images inherited from human and nonhuman ancestors • Influences tendency to react in particular ways to certain things
Alfred Adler(1870 – 1937) • Believed development of personality comes from desires to overcome infantile feelings of helplessness • “strive for superiority” – desire for control of environment and fulfillment as a person
Karen Horney(1885 – 1952) • First feminist personality psychologist • Disputed idea of “penis envy” • Claimed men actually have “womb envy” • Lack of ability to bear children gives lives less meaning/substance • Put stronger emphasis on power of cultural factors on personality, rather than instincts
