  1. Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion C11, S3 

  2. Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion • Whenever one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force back on the first object. • “You can’t touch without being touched!”

  3. Action Force, Reaction Force • Action and reaction forcesare a pair. • They may be equal in size but opposite in direction. • This means that when you push on a wall, the wall pushes back on you with a force equal in strength to the force you exerted.

  4. Action Force, Reaction Force • You constantly use action-reaction force pairs as you move about. • When you jump, you push down on the ground. • The ground then pushes up on you. It is this upward force that pushes you into the air.

  5. Action Force, Reaction Force • When you walk forward, you push backward on the ground. • Your shoe pushes the Earth backwards, and the Earth pushes your shoe forward. • Earth has so much mass compared to you that it does not move noticeably when you push it. • If you step on something that has less mass than you do, like a skateboard, you can see it being pushed back.

  6. Action Force, Reaction Force • The thrustof a race car pushing it forward is the action forceand thedragof a race car pulling it back is the reaction force. • The gravitational force is the action force pulling the car downward, and the reaction force is the ground pushing back up on the race car.

  7. Question 1 In your own words, describe Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion.

  8. Question 1 In your own words, describe Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion. Answer Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
