The number of Irish moving abroad rose by 16 per cent in 2011 with 46,600 Irish people migrating, of that 20,600 were women. • For my case study I am looking at the effect of social networking sites on Irish migrants. • I will be focusing on Irish females, between the ages of 20 and 35, who have lived abroad.
According to 2012 statistics from the PEW Research Centre 75% of women who use the internet use social networking sites, 12% more than the male internet user.
All participants agreed that though the medium is convenient for staying • connected with people at home it should not be used as a substitute for real • life interactions.
According to PEW; women are more active on social networking • sites with more than half of the internet users logging onto the sites once a day.
Barry Wellman points out that; “…regardless of what revolutions occur, in terms of society, economy, polity or technology, communities will find new ways to re-invent itself and fit into the societal strata – such is human nature.”
