Multiple Sexual Partnerships in the Context of HIV Prevention:Alternative Methods to Gather Evidence for Programming Around an Under-reported Issue
What was the challenge? • Cohort studies conducted in some parts of Zimbabwe found association between multiple sexual partnerships and HIV infection • Qualitative /anecdotal evidence of multiple partnerships including concurrency • BUT: National DHS 2005 data showing relatively low levels of multiple sexual partnerships • Leading to questions: • Are MCP a key issue to address nationally? • If yes, what can be the objectives & targets for a national programme? • What drives MCP?
What was done? • Bio-behavioural baseline survey (n=4,879) in 16 districts of Zimbabwe using Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interview (ACASI) • Rapid assessments in 26 districts including 104 focus group discussions with adult men, adult women, young men, young women
What was the result? • Higher levels of multiple partnerships reported in the NBCS baseline using a self-administered method as compared to DHS • Disaggregated data on prevalence of different forms of multiple partnerships • Targets for national program set • Perceived reasons of MCP and related norms established • Developed interventions considering community perceptions on MCP in addition to theory-driven approach (knowledge, risk perception, self-efficacy, social norms) • National program scaled up!
