Muslim Physicians’ Unite in Call to Eradicate Polio-A FIMA initiative. 24 - 31 October 2014
Summary The Federation of Islamic Medical Associations launched a global call to action to end polio and improve child health during the week of World Polio Day. Brunswick led on the development of a press release that was translated into Arabic, and distributed across the UAE. After reaching out to our local media contacts, we decided to tailor the press release to local audiences by titling it ‘Muslim Physicians’ in the UAE Urged to Join Fight Against Polio’, and featuring a quote from a UAE-based physician. A few days prior to the distribution of the press release, Brunswick arranged an interview opportunity on Dubai’s number one talk-show radio station, Dubai Eye, with radio presenter Suzanne Radford. Through Brunswick and Gates Foundation’s regional networks, we were able to source two guests for the show: Mr. Mohammad Jamal Alsaati from the Islamic Development Bank and Dr. Jamil Itani, a pediatrician from ProVita International Medical Center (UAE). The interview was a great success and the two interviewees discussed the role the Muslim community plays in the global eradication effort and the importance of the call to action extensively. After distributing the press release to media on the 30th October, it was immediately published by WAM, the UAE government news agency, and then published by all leading local English and Arabic daily newspapers. Pakistan’s leading English daily newspaper, Dawn, ran a comprehensive article online, and leading medical trade magazine Arab Health published a story, as did Philanthropy Age. This is a long-term initiative which will culminate in the announcement of the final Declaration early next year. Brunswick will continue to source media opportunities to publicize the project.
