Concussion Legislation - Facts • Every Coach and Official working with student-athletes who are 18 of years of age or younger MUST complete the training • Must complete the training every 3 years • Must complete the training prior to the start of the 2011-12 sport season • Must complete the approved training on the League’s website

Parents and Student-Athletes What needs to be provided? • Information on the warning signs, symptoms, risk factors and what to do if a concussion happens. Where do I find this information? • Everything you need is contained in the MSHSL Eligibility Brochure What if I sent it out or printed it already without including the concussion information? • There is an Addendum and Revised Eligibility Statement that MUST be distributed and signed by parents and athletes.
Parents and Student-Athletes Do we need to train parents and students? • No, the legislation only requires that you provide them with information How do I verify that the parents and students have received the information? • The Eligibility Statement that parents must sign verifies that they have received the information.

Effective for the Fall of 2011 Every Minnesota Head Coach is required to: • Complete the Continuing Education Requirement (CER) beginning in the fall of 2011. • Complete the sport specific Rule Interpretation Meeting • The CER is available on the ‘Coaches Clipboard’ page • The CER and Rule Interpretation Meeting are only accessible through the ‘Coaches Clipboard’ page

Effective for the Fall of 2011 Step One: • Go to www.mshsl.org • On the yellow bar near the top of the MSHSL homepage click on Coaches • Choose ‘Coaches Clipboard’ • Register as ‘NEW’ user or sign in
Effective for the Fall of 2011 Step Two: • Add each sport or activity that you coach, the school and the level. • Click the ADD SPORT button at the bottom of the page • A list of what you coach will show up under ‘My Current Sports’
Effective for the Fall of 2011 Step Three: • Determine how you meet the State Statute Requirement • Check the appropriate field • Complete the detailed information for that field • Click CONTINUE You will then be directed to the Continuing Education Requirement Tab on the ‘Coaches Clipboard’
Effective for the Fall of 2011 Step Three: • If you don’t meet the State Statute in any of the 5 ways indicated on the form • Click the ‘I don’t meet any of these’ field • Click CONTINUE You will then be directed to the Coaches Education Program Tab on the ‘Coaches Clipboard’ to register for an in-person course.

Public & Charter School Head Coaches • MUST meet the State Statute Requirement (SSR) • MUST complete the CER every 3 years • Must complete the Concussion Training every 3 years as part of the CER • MUST complete the Rules Interpretation Meeting Annually
Private & Home School Head Coaches • At this time are NOT required to meet the State Statute Requirement for Coaching Licensure • MUST complete the CER every 3 years • Must complete the Concussion Training every 3 years as part of the CER • MUST complete the Rules Interpretation Meeting
ALL Lower Level Coaches • Do not have to meet the SSR • MUST complete Chapter 2 – Concussion Management which is part of the CER • 2012 MUST complete the Rules Interpretation Meeting
Cheer Coaches • Do not have to meet the SSR • Must complete the CER every 3 years • Must complete the Concussion Training every 3 years as part of the CER • Must complete the Rules Interpretation Meeting • Must follow all NFHS Spirit Rules Stunting Squads • Must complete AACCA • Must complete Stunt Progressions 1
Fine Arts Advisors • Are not required to complete the CER at this time • Are not required to complete the Concussion Training at this time

Effective for the Fall of 2011 • There are two Tabs at the top of the ‘Coaches Clipboard’ page • Continuing Education • Coaches Education • How you answer the State Statute Requirement form will determine the Tabbed page you are directed to • You can click on the Tabs at the top of the page to move between the two Tabbed pages
Effective for the Fall of 2011 • Coaches must complete all 4 chapters of the CER prior to having access to the Rules Interpretation Meeting • A checkmark will appear in front of the link upon completion of that Chapter • Once you begin a chapter you can stop and then return to it at a later time to complete • The Rule Interpretation Meeting link will not be active until Chapters 1-4 are complete • The Rule Interpretation Meeting will only be available during the dates listed in parenthesis

Effective for the Fall of 2011 Information in the White Box at the top of the ‘Coaches Clipboard’ will communicate: • How the Coach meets the State Statute Requirement • The Completion Date of the CER • The Renewal Date of the CER
Additional Resources The ‘Coaches Clipboard’: • Delivers the CER and Rule Interpretation Meeting • Connects a Coach to the Administrative Side of the website to schedules, rosters, stats, line-up forms, games wanted, their schools sport specific activity page, official ratings • Provides current sport specific news items • Provides resources that support the content
