You will learn: • Describe the conditions in Earth that cause metamorphic rocks to form • Classify metamorphic rocks as foliated or nonfoliated
Vocabulary • metamorphic rock • foliated • nonfoliated
It is important because... • metamorphic rocks are useful because of their unique properties.
a. Metamorphic Rocks • Can form from igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks • The form of the rock and/or the composition of the rock can change
Heat and Pressure • Adding heat and pressure can change a rock from it’s parent rock to a new rock. • For example: • shale to slate to phyllite to schist to gneiss • Basalt to schist • Granite to gneiss
Hot Fluids • Water with dissolved elements reacts with minerals in rocks and change the compositions. • Mostly water and carbon dioxide
a. Foliated • Foliated rocks form when mineral grains flatten and line up in parallel lines • Example: slate and gneiss
Nonfoliated • No layering occurs and mineral grains do not line up • Example: marble, quartzite
Ticket Out the Door • How are metamorphic rocks formed? • What is a “parent rock”? • How are metamorphic rocks classified? • What role do fluids play in rock metamorphism? • Why is marble used for sculptures?
