What We Know: • Howard Hanson Dam will be limited to 30% capacity • “Pineapple Express” conditions would trigger significant release of water • 3 to 5 year exposure • 30% chance per year of significant water release • 8 to 72 hour advanced warning • Some schools may be used as staging areas for evacuations but not housing • City of Kent is putting significant emphasis on strengthening levies
KSD’s Flood Focus • Supporting needs of lead agencies (i.e. buses for evacuations) • Planning for continuity of instruction • Protecting our facilities and equipment
What We Are Doing To Prepare • Established coordination team • Participation in every lead agency meeting • Questioning agencies for scenario information • Purchased excess flood insurance for valley schools • Evaluated building protection systems • Meeting with mayor, valley superintendents and unions
What We Are Doing To Prepare(Cont’d) • Setting up contractors for potential mold abatements & repairs • Will develop detailed plans for serving students as soon as we can reasonably determine lead agency plans • Completing communication plans for valley schools • Will conduct simulations to test our preparedness
