Using technology in learning and teachingFY Maths Vesna Perišić V.Perisic@soton.ac.uk School of Mathematics
Technology? • Blackboard - is the University's online learning system • MathXL- is a software developed by a published in support of the text book ‘Mathematics for Engineers’ by Craft and Davison • Zappers-? • YouTube • Facebook
Zappers, what are they? 5 • Devices that attract and kill insects that are attracted by light. • Small handsets which enable students to give their answers to questions displayed using PowerPoint. • Powerful electronic detoxifiers. • An online game about Global Warming/Climate Change. • None of the above.
My experience with Zappers • Diagnostic Quiz • Revision Session
Observed benefits in using zappers: • Increased students engagement. • Increased students-lecturer communication. • An opportunity for students to place themselves within their cohort (no embarrassments ). • An opportunity to discuss typical errors with students built in the multiple choice questions. • No marking.
Challenges: • Time consuming – (preparation of presentations, current organisation of the whole system,….) • Anxiety - … will everything work properly in the lecture theatre?
Feedback from the students: In spite of all difficulties I had at the beginning of each session, over 60% of the students think that this technology is beneficial for their learning and would like to use it more often.
Conclusion: I will be exploring further how to use technology (not only zappers) efficiently to support teaching in spite of the fact that my preferred teaching method is chalk –and –talk.
