What is synthesizing? • To combine individual ideas, influences, or materials to create a new idea or product. • Drawing from a variety of sources of research materials, combining ideas with prior knowledge and applying the information to some new work or creation. • Consensus- Coming to a conclusion chosen by MOST of the participants based on the best choice for a successful outcome.

  3. Synthesizing? • Get into topic groups. • Decide what is most important about the topic: • 1. State the problem • 2. Paraphrase the main ideas. • 3. What /How many sources of information are available? • 4. Connect the topic with your own experiences. • 5.Connect proposed public policy with the possible outcomes of the project.

  4. Synthesizing/proposing: • Decide on the manner to present your topic. • Report your idea to the class. • We will use consensus to decide on three different topics.

  5. Topic Search-Project Citizen • Find a Public Policy Issue. • You may use AJC.com • You may choose a newspaper. • Choose a topic: Summarize the topic with the 5W’s and H. (762) • (The H will explain why this topic is your proposal.)

  23. Grading Procedure Update; • All late class work or homework will earn no higher than a 70. • Late projects will loose 10 points per day. • Absent? You have the same number of days you were absent to make up the work OR take the test.

  27. Public Policy • Laws or rules that tell us what we can or can’t do as citizens. • Key elements: • 1. Doing something or action step • 2. Allocating resources: money, people, facilities, values. • 3. Exercising authority: power, influence • 4.Resolving issues • 5. Managing the public good
