  1. 1.4 Solving Inequalities Objectives • Learn to solve and graph inequalities. • Learn to write and solve compound inequalities.

  2. Properties of Inequalities Properties of inequalities are the same as properties for equations EXCEPT if you multiply or divide both sides of an inequality by a negative number you must switch the inequality.

  3. Solving and Graphing Inequalities • Recall < and > are open circles on a number line, while ≤ and ≥ are closed/filled circles on a number line. (#1) -12 ≥ 24x (#4) 57-4x > 13

  4. Special Cases (#11) 6x-13 < 6(x-2) (#13) -7(3x-7) + 21x ≥ 50

  5. Word Problems • (#16) Find the lesser of two consecutive integers with a sum greater than 16. • (#17) A company estimates that 1% of the computer chips it produces are defective. How many chips must the company make and test in order to be able to ship at least 4500 non-defective chips?

  6. Compound Inequalities • Compound inequalities usually contain the word “and” (both true) or “or”(either true). • “and” (#20) 6x ≥ -24 and 9x < 54 • “or” (#22) 4x < 16 or 12x > 144

  7. Word Problem • (#26) A baker needs between 40 lb and 50 lb of a flour-sugar mixture that contains ten times as much flour as sugar. What are the possible weights of flour the baker can use?
