Intro to Gestalt • The Gestalt principle of organization describes how the mind organizes well with visual data. • Gestalt is also a psychology term meaning “Unified Whole” • Three founders of the Gestalt Theory are: Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Kohler, and Kurt Koffka • ‘ The whole is other than the sum of its parts.” – Kurt Koffka
The six principles • Pragnanz ( Figure-Ground) • Similarity • Proximity • Closure • Continuity • Symmetry
Figure-Ground ( pragnanz) • Shows our perceptual tendency to separate figures from their backgrounds • It is based on components such as contrast, color and size
Similarity • Things with similar visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, or value will be viewed as belonging together in the viewer’s mind
Proximity • Objects or shapes that are close to each other appear as groups • Grouping can be done using : • Tone/Value • Color • Shape Size
Closure • The effect of suggesting a visual connection between sets of elements, which do not touch each other. • Closure is seen when elements are aligned in such a way that the viewer perceives that the information could be connected.
Continuity • This principle continues shapes beyond their ending points • It creates a fluid connection among compositional parts
Symmetry • The viewer should not be given the impression that something is out of balance • Our brain is satisfied when we see shapes as symmetrical • Symmetry order has connotations of stability, consistency, and structure
