Dear Brethren, I cannot tell you how many times I have been asked the question, “Are you a traveling man?”, nor can I tell you how many times the act of “traveling” is often misinterpreted in the Craft. You see, brethren, “traveling” in the narrowest sense of the word, is commonly understood by many in the Craft as the outward/physical act of traveling from one place to another, or Masonically speaking, the act of traveling from lodge to lodge spreading the cement of brotherly love. Now, you’re probably asking yourself, “What’s wrong with that?” Or, you may be saying, “That’s what it’s all about!” To which I would simply reply, “You still have much to learn.” Why? You might ask. Well, the answer is quite simple. You see, brethren, the word “traveling”, as with all things in Freemasonry has a double meaning. How? You might ask. Well, simply put, the word “traveling” is meant to be understood as having two senses… an Operative and a Speculative. You see, brethren, it is the Operative sense of the word “traveling” many of us in the Fraternity readily adopt and easily understand, but what of the Speculative? Or, perhaps the better question is ‘Does a Speculative sense of the word “traveling” exist in the Fraternity?’ To which I would simply respond, “Yes, it does!” So, you’re probably wondering, “Where?” Well, brethren, hmm… how should I put this… well, let’s just say it exists in the space between the worlds where actions performed are rarely understood except by those with ears to hear and eyes to see. Yup, pretty cryptic, I know. So, let me put it more succinctly: In the lodge. You see, brethren, it is in the lodge (the space between the worlds) that we first encounter the Speculative sense of the word “traveling” through the use of ritual. For ritual, brethren, is but a metaphorical expression of the Speculative sense of the word “traveling” which, we as initiates of the Order, through a dedicated study of the seven liberal arts and sciences and overcoming of the passions by means of a steadfast and willful application of cleansing, self-denial, diet, exercise, meditation, and prayer, are afforded the wherewithal to travel inwardly/spiritually upon the level of time to that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns. • P.S. – "What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality." - Plutarch Most Fraternally in Light, Luis A.
