  2. CRIMES IN 1900-45 • 1900 – Crimes Act. • 1903 – WPSU was founded – the Suffragettes. • 1914 – Great war begins – cost the lives of. nearly a million British people. • 1917 – Russian Revolution. • 1933 – Great Depression. • 1939-45 – Second World War brought huge hardship for the population.

  3. PUNISHMENTS IN 1900-45 • 1901 – Finger print databases. • 1902 – Borstal opens for young offenders. • 1907 – Probation service. • 1910 – Radio used to arrest Doctor Crippen. • 1936 – Prison opens – Wakefield. • 1948 – Attendance Centres.

  5. THE SUFFRAGETTES Suffragettes had false identities. In prison, the civil disobedience continued. When Evelyn Manesta, one of the Manchester Suffragettes refused to pose for a picture, a guard was brought in to restrain her in front of the camera.

  6. FIRST WORLD WAR 1914-18 • It began in August 1914. It was triggered by the assassination of the Austrian Archduke, Franz Ferdinand and his wife on 28th June 1914. • Anglo-Russian Entente – Was an agreement between Britain and Russia. • Rifles, machine guns, gas, zeppelins, tanks, planes and torpedoes were used in the attack.

SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-45 • Every person, business and service was involved. • It involved 61 countries with 1.7 billion people. • Fifty million people lost their lives, and hundreds or millions were injured. • The Second World War was started by Germany in an unprovoked attack on Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany and Hitler refused to abort his invasion on Poland.

  8. SECOND WORLD WAR After World War 1 Had ended in 1918, Germany had to give up land and was banned from having armed forces. Women had a wide range of jobs to do during the Second World War: mechanics, tank drivers, air raid wardens, plumbers, nurses, ambulance drivers, working factories, making bombs and aircraft parts.

FUN FACTS • President Mckinley was shot dead by Leon Czolgsz – 1901 • Teddy Roosevelt was elected president – 1901 • The first comic book is invented – 1904 • The first Yellow Pages is invented – 1905 • The Jukebox is invented with 24 songs – 1905 • An animated cartoon is created – 1906 • Teddy Roosevelt first president to leave the country – 1906 • First subject on radio is about woman suffrage - 1909

  11. CHART TO SHOW, MURDER, BURGLARY AND THEFT It shows that theft is more common than any other crime committed in the 20th century. 85% of crimes were committed by men, over half by men aged 21 or under.
