  1. Evolution Vocabulary

  2. Evolution • Evolution is defined biologically as: descent with modification • AKA a genetic change in a population over time. • Important Concepts to understand: • Evolution as defined above does not happen in individuals- it happens to populations • Scientists have data to suggest that all life stems from one common ancestor, and through different mechanisms and pressures biodiversity and speciation for all living things came about • EVOLUTION IS THE UNIFYING CONCEPT OF BIOLOGY-Scientists state that EVERYTHING in biology we have studied and will study has its roots in, or can be explained by evolution

  3. Theridion grallator. Species • The concept of what a species is and how a species should be defined in biology is still a concept of debate for evolutionary biologists. • Several different concepts about species exist in scientific discussion • The most accepted definition currently for a species comes from the biological species concept: it states that a SPECIES is a group of individuals that actually or potentially interbreed in nature.

  4. Mechanisms for Evolution • MUTATION • GENE FLOW- • NATURAL SELECTION • GENETIC DRIFT • SPECIATION

  5. Mechanisms for Evolution • MUTATION-one true source of variation • GENE FLOW- migration • Gene flow works in opposition to the other 3 processes to reduce the chance of speciation • NATURAL SELECTION-survival of the fittest • GENETIC DRIFT-change b/c of luck • SPECIATION

  6. Cornell Note Questions • What is Genetic Drift? • What are the effects of Genetic Drift? • What is the impact of GD on small populations? • What are Bottlenecks and Founder Effects? • How do Bottlenecks and Founder effects relate to GD? • What is Gene flow? • What is one factor that greatly effects gene flow? • How does Gene Flow effect variation and speciation?

  7. Cornell Note Questions Cont. • What are the 4 requirements to having Natural selection take place? • Do you have to be perfect or the best for Natural Selection to select you for survival? • Are you always going to progress with natural selection? • Natural selection usually lets what traits survive? 5. What are the steps to speciation? (How des it work?) 6. What is allopatric Speciation?

  8. Hardy Weinberg • Hardy Weinberg is an equation that shows whether or not evolution is happening in a population or not • (in reality Hardy Weinberg is ideal- evolution is always happening so Hardy Weinberg never or rarely holds true) • If Hardy Weinberg is true there is no mutation, no new alleles in the population (no gene flow) Mating must be random, no genetic drift, and no natural selection • EQUATION: p2 +2pq+q2 = 1 and p+q=1 • p2= Homozygous Dominatnt AA • 2pq= Heterozygous Aa • Q2= Homozygous recessive aa

  9. Evidences of Evolution • ATAVISMS • VESTIGIAL FEATURES • ANALOGOUS FEATURES • HOMOLOGOUS FEATURES • EMBRYOLOGICAL EVIDENCE • FOSSIL RECORD EVIDENCE
