The Multicast Spectrum Unicast (Broadcast) Overlay Multicast - Bayeux, ALMI, TAG, P2P... - IP Multicast - PIM-SIM, DVMRP... - Good for large-scale media distribution, but - large size of routing table - Slow adaptation to changes in routing topology (Long convergence time) Good for file sharing, but - Limited bandwidth in the first mile - Large end-to-end delay - Overlay network does not map well on top of the underlying IP networks: * Very costly to network providers * Hard to conduct Traffic Engineering The Ideal Multicast Spectrum X C A S T Overlay Multicast - Bayeux, ALMI, TAG, P2P... - IP Multicast -PIM-SIM, DVMRP... - • Areas for possible research cooperation • Tree construction, Tree Maintenance • (e.g., ALM) • Router-Assisted schemes and • mechanisms (e.g., Active-Net) Good for delay-sensitive & interactive applications, such as VoIP, Video or Multi-media conferences - scalability with respect to the number of groups - rapid adaptation to changes in routing topology - no limited bandwidth in the first mile
I would like to see the contribution of new RG End of Analog surface TV transmission (Japan) IP multicasted TV broadcasting All Digital TV will have ethernet(& tcp/ip) Environment 2006 2007 2008 2010 2011 2009 SGM service Draft-irtf-ssgm-sgm-taxomony, etc Proposed standard Research paper activities SSGM Commercial products and services IRTF RG SSGM IETF WG L3 L5 WG ALM L4 WG OMcast XCAST L3 WG Large testbed accelerates R&D L4 congestion control L5 P2P signaling Host Identity Real time Application StarBED , AnyBED ,NetBED PlanetLab GENI
