Mission: alleviate the suffering that results from human physical pain Make charitable grants • Address pain at the bedside -- clinical interventions • Pain in the context of emergency medicine • Pain in children • Pain in non-verbal populations • Pain in the elderly • Nimble grants • Close the gap between knowledge and practice • Better to be a ‘rifle than a shotgun’

Foundation Citizenship • Increase public awareness about the undertreatment of pain and new ways of treating it • Help to provide new leaders in the field interested in sharing the message that pain may be treated responsibly • Increase the ranks of researchers/leaders who will work with the media and policy makers • Working with other foundations to help to address the better treatment of pain

  4. Tasks • Program • Financial Oversight • Governance • Liaison and Representative • Scout -- identify new projects, consultants, projects • Resource • Advocate for private foundation involvement in the field • Someone who will listen • Translator • And then the political aspects …
