New York City • the most populous city in the United States • important center for international affairs • located on a large natural harbor • area of 305 square miles (790 km2) • population exceeds 8 million people • consists of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island

  4. Nicknames • referred to as • "The City That Never Sleeps," • "TheCapital of the World," • "The City,“ • "Gotham,” • and the "Big Apple."

  5. History in brief • founded as a commercial trading post by the Dutch in 1624 called New Amsterdam • 1664 the colony came under English control • served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790

  6. The Bronx • the only borough not primarily located on an island

  7. Brooklyn • an independent city until its consolidation with New York City in 1898 • a magnet for immigrants, and many ethnic groups dominate a particular ethnic neighborhood

  8. Manhattan • located primarily on Manhattan Island • consists of several small adjacent islands: Roosevelt Island, Randall's Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island and others

  9. It is the smallest yet most urbanized of the five boroughs • It is also one of the wealthiest counties in the United States • a major commercial, financial, and cultural center of both the United States and the world

Staten Island • separated from New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull and from New York by New York Bay • access to Brooklyn and New Jersey via Bridges • the only one of the boroughs that does not have below-ground transport • The free Ferry connects the borough to Manhattan and is a popular tourist attraction as you can see views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and lower Manhattan.

  12. Famous landmarks The Statue of Liberty - standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor • commemorating the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence • given to the US by the people of France • the statue is made of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel

  13. Ellis Island From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through the portal of Ellis Island

  14. Empire State Building • Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York • One of the world's tallest building (15th tallest) • 1945 plane crash - a bomber, piloted in thick fog by Lieutenant Colonel Smith

  15. 1 World Trade Center Freedom Tower • under construction and expected to be completed in 2013 • chosen instead of rebuilding the twin towers after their destruction in the September 11, 2001 attacks

  16. Central Park • in the heart of Manhattan • home to numerous restaurants, playgrounds, the Metropolitan Museum, the Central Park Zoo, and Wollman Rink, Belvedere Castle and the historic Carousel

  17. Wall Street Financial District • the southern end of Manhattan • It includes Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange as well as other financial institutions.

  18. Times Square is the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop - a time ball made of crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of One Times Square building and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year.

  19. Rockefeller Center • is a complex of 19 commercial buildings • declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987
