Basic facts about R&DA • was established by Act No. 172/2005 C., originally by Act. No. 203/2001 C. (STAA) • is the most important organisation in SR supporting R&D in all sectors – university, state (SAS), private and non-profit • supports research in all scientific areas • provides grant money from state budget to support research objectives of applicant • provides grants based on quality of the research proposal • is located on Mýtna 23, Bratislava, Slovakia

Evaluation of proposals • basic criteria defined • mark system used • peer review system • evaluation from 3 independent referees • expert committees in 10 scientific areas (6+4) • expert committees make recommendations to the Board, based on projects and their evaluations • Board approves grant to every selected project (Agency Boards, no Presidium)
Evaluation criteria • Scientific content of the project, proposed methods, originality, innovativeness and project timetable • Potential scientific and socio-economic benefits of the results for society (separate criteria for basic and applied research) • Expertise of the project leader and research team • Existence of necessary infrastructure • Soundness of the project (this criterion is so far evaluated by domestic referees only) • Quality of the project manegment

2006 Human potential • continual growth of skills and knowledge of R&D workers after finishing the doctorial studies- investments into third level of university education (POSTDOC) • intelectuall properties and project management (EDUCATION IPR) • more tight interconnection between R&D workers working at foreign institutions and R&D institution in the SR (DATABASE, REINTEGRATION) • create opportunities for excellent tutors for doctorand studies (TUTORS) • ETHICS - Improve information sources in R&D community on ethics questions in science
Science popularization 2006 • showsignificance of R&D to wider public with special attentionto young people (IMPORTANCE of R&D) • stimulate creation of strategic partnerships focused on science education and support of scientific culture between R&D institutions and elementary and high schools in the SR (EDUCATION) • improve the mass communication (press and electronic media) in area of science popularization (DISSEMINATION) • support activity of talented young people through regional and national competitions and exhibitions (TALENTS)
