What is a Marsh? • An area of low-lying land that is flooded in wet seasons or at high tide, and typically remains waterlogged at all times • Characterized by it’s two main parts: > waterlogged land > water system
All vegetation has adapted to the soft, saturated soil conditions • Usually connected to or part of an estuary environment or ecosystem/
Marsh as an Ecosystem • Animals in a marsh can be very diverse • Salt water marsh mammals include: > muskrats > voles > raccoons > mink
The wildlife found in a marsh depend on certain different factors: > what part of the marsh (water or land) > what kind of marsh (salt or freshwater)
The Waters of the Marsh • Inhabitants of the marsh waters are very different depending on what sort of marsh they live in • Saltwater: Freshwater: > crabs > crayfish > mollusks > river otter > grass shrimp > snapping turtle
The Marsh and the Community • Important jobs: > provision of food > income for fisherman > natural buffers against storms > prevent major flooding of local urban areas inland
The Future of the Marsh • Quickly disappearing due to human activity: > pollution due to city water runoffs > being replaced by housing for the increasing human population • Programs have been put in place in order to keep marshes and other estuary like environments from disappearing altogether
