“To love the Lord your God and to serve Him with all your heart” (Deut 11:13): “To serve Him” – Could this be prayer or does it really Mean sacrifice? The verse goes on to say “with all your heart.” sacrifice certainly demands nothing of the heart! So why does the verse mention the heart? It must mean to imply “prayer.” That is why Psalm 141:2 says of David, “I will make my prayer a form of incense before You,” and similarly of Daniel it is written, “He went into his house with the uppoer story windows open facing Jerusalem, and three times a day, he would kneel and pray, acknowledging God” (Daniel 6:11)
Windows in a sanctuary..so “that a worshiper can look toward heaven and develop humility.” Rashi
“Fresh air calms the mind and makes kavvanah easier” Windows make the room porous to human outcries of suffering from the street. It is not enough that we Good look into our hearts. When we pray for the ideal world of tomorrow, we are able to look out on the world as it really is today. The Zohar teaches that there should be 12 windows because each of the 12 tribes of Israel has its own window in heaven corresponding to the uniqueness of that particular tribe’s soul. In every synagogue 12 seraphim (angels) are appointed corresponding to the tribes.
For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. Ps 39:6
