The Doppler Effect 16.9
Doppler Effect • Have you ever listened to campus safety drive by quickly with their lights and sirens going? • What did it sound like? • High pitch as they were coming, low pitch as they were leaving. • Called Doppler effect after Christian Doppler who first labeled it.
Deriving the Formula – Moving Source • Moving toward object • ’ = - vsT • Where • = wavelength of wave • ’ = perceived wavelength • vs = velocity of source • T = Period of wave
Deriving the Formula – Moving Source fo = frequency observed v = speed of wave ’ = perceived wavelength fo = frequency observed fs = frequency of source v = speed of wave vs = speed of source
Moving Observer • Encounters more condensations than if standing still
General Case • Combine the two formulas • Both observer and source can be moving • WARNING! • v, vs, and vo are signless • Use the top signs when that object is moving towards the other object
A Use of Doppler • NEXRAD • NEXt generation weather RADar • Sends out radio waves • Wave bounce of water drops in storms • Radar receives echoes • Computer checks to compare the frequencies • Can compute to see how fast the clouds are spinning
Practice Problems • Move yourselves to do these exercises • 477 CQ16, 18-20, P 70 – 74 • Total of 9 Problems
