Energy Roles SOL LS 8 McDonald
Energy Roles • Each of the organisms in an ecosystem fills the energy role of producer, consumer, or decomposer Omnivores Carnivores Consumers Producers Decomposers
Energy • Energy enters most ecosystems as sunlight. • Organism that use the sun’s energy to make food (plants, algae, and some bacteria) store it as energy
Other Forms of Energy • Some can also obtain energy from chemicals (hydrogen sulfide gas) , underground or deep sea vents
Producers • Producers: An organism that can make its own food • They are the source of all food in the ecosystem
Consumers • Consumers: An organism that obtain energy by feeding on other organisms • They are classified by what they eat
Herbivores • Herbivores are consumers that eat only plants
Carnivores • Carnivores are consumers that eat only animals (meat)
Scavengers • Scavengers are carnivores consumers that feed on dead organisms
Omnivores • Omnivores are consumers that eat both plants and animals
Decomposers • Decomposers: An organism that break down wastes and dead organisms and return raw materials to ecosystem. • Raw materials are return to cycle back into the environment • Mushrooms and bacteria are common decomposers
Food Webs • Food webs consists of the many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem
Food Chain • Food Chain is a series of event in which one organism eats another to obtain energy
