3. Marconi’s Early Life • He was the son of an Italian father and an Irish mother. • He liked to experiment with physics and electronics. • He successfully managed to send wireless signals over 1.5 miles away. • He moved to England in 1879 to show off his new invention, the radio.

13. Typewriter Pros: It doesn’t take as long as writing with a pencil. You can keep on going without breaking a pencil. Cons: When you make a mistake you have to start all over. It is easy to mess up and hit the wrong keys. You might run out of ribbon or typing paper. Writing on paper Pros: You can still go on when you have a mistake because you would just erase it. You have a chance to change something when writing on paper. Cons: It takes a little longer than on a typewriter. If you don’t have a pencil, how are you going to write. 17. Pony Express Young men delivered mail on horseback from Missouri to California in just 10 days. It lasted only 1 ½ years and was like a 2,000 mile relay race Riders were mostly teenagers, some as young as 13 and paid $25 a week (which was a lot). It ended after telegraphs were invented. Transcontinental Railroad In 1862, the U.S government gave two companies the right to start building the Transcontinental Railroad. The Union Pacific began building tracks west from Omaha, Nebraska and the Central Pacific began building east from Sacramento, California. Both sides met in 1869 in Promontory Point, Utah. 18. Model T Car Henry Ford invented it in 1908. It cost only $950 at first and cost as little as $280 later. It was the first time cars were mass produced, making it keep enough for the average person to buy. It could only go 8 miles per hour. 19. The Effects of Transportation We hate to ride on slow transportation. We can get frustrated because it takes a long time. We would like faster transportation than riding on horses. People think faster is better than slower and so they kept inventing transportation that could go faster. Cars today can go as faster than 100 miles per hour. Cars back than could only go 8 miles per hour. Planes also go much faster and farther than they used to. Without faster transportation, we most likely would not be able to travel all over the world like we do today.
