Hakim By: Donny E. Ehmke
About Hakim and his story Hakim is a 12 year old Palestinian boy in grade 6 and is from the city of Tulkarm. One day he was in the street with his friends hiding from the Israeli army, when they could they would throw stonesat them. Then the soldiers got angry and started to shoot them, the boys ran away as fast as they could. While running, Hakim didn’t realize is that he got shot in his leg, he kept running anyway. He fell down in the street, his friends came back to help him, but the soldiers caught up and pushed them away. The soldiers spared his life, but Hakim knows that they wanted to kill him. Questions I had after reading and answers • Why are the boys throwing stones at the soldiers? It’s because the boys want them to go away, by having the courage to throw stones at the Israeli army and risking there lives shows that they want the soldier out of there town. (Found in reading) • Why didn’t the soldiers kill Hakim? There is no actual answer to this question, maybe the soldiers would have had guilt if they killed him while he’s on the ground or maybe they just wanted to let him suffer with the inability to stand with his own 2 legs. (Found by thinking of answers that made sense) Palestinian child throwing stones at Israeli army.
My reaction and do I agree or disagree • I could not believe that this young boy would risk his life just to throw stones at the Israeli army just to show that he wants them out of his city. I couldn’t imagine the look on his parents face if he would have died. • I think that he is doing a right thing, but he could have died. If he wants the Israeli army to get out of his city, I believe he should try things that won’t risk his life.
Solutions • There are many solutions to the problem. The most obvious solution is to make peace with the Israelis, but if they have not tried peace in 50 years, I don’t think they are going to make peace any time soon. • Another solution is to move out of Tulkarm, but this would probably be a temporary solution because the Israelis would probably go to the next Palestinian city and the next, and the next, and the next until there is no more Palestinian land in Israel.
