“my plan” • Within each unit, the study of language will progress as follows: • a.thinking (reading) about a topic • b.observing a scene • c.expressing understanding, • d.recording personal thoughts on specific readings or discussions, • e.correcting (repairing) expressions (using material developed in d.), developing control of language through grammar lessons • f.self-testing • g.exploring further • h.creating new material (personalizing, individualizing)

Scope and sequence • nominal phrases; nouns, articles, adjectives; pronouns; order of words in the sentence + verbal phrases; regular verbs in the present tense, contrast between ser and estar, irregular present tense • verbs in the present progressive, past participles as adjectives; adverbs, distinction between por and para + verbs in the past; preterite and imperfect, conjunctions • gender and number, pronouns, relative clauses + formal and informal commands, conditionals • passive voice and impersonal sentences, negative expressions + the present and past subjunctive

Results of pilot evaluation summer 2003 Participants felt the materials & the experience significantly improved their Spanish language & cultural competency. 71% retention rate Participants’ pre- and post-test performance scores improved significantly for nearly all measures.
