  3. Goals of the MatType/Scoping and Limiting Projects • Make OPAC search results more consistent and accurate. • Provide more options for refining searches by Limits, “type of material, ” and Scopes. • Provides more search options!

  4. So What’s a ‘Limit?’ • A limit is another filter for refining a search • Limits can be selected: • Via the “Limit/Sort Search” after completing a phrase index search (e.g., Title, Author, or Subject). • On the Advanced Search screen • There are several types of limits (yes, we’ll look at them in a moment), including: • Formats • Material Types NOTE: Keep in mind that Language, Year of Publication, Publisher, and Gov’t Publication are also limits, but are not discussed in this tutorial, since no changes have been made to those limits.

  5. Let’s look at the Advanced Search page. • You’ll notice a: • New arrangement of choices on this page • Some differences in Collection and Institutions (Scopes). • Word changes in Mat Type menu (Scopes and Limits, depending upon applying before or after search). • Addition of Electronic, Video, Audio, and Microform Formats (Limits)

  6. Let’s look more closely at those changes The MAT TYPE menu has the following changes:

  12. Limit/Sort Page • The Limit/Sort page is very similar to the Advanced Search page and has most of the same menus. • The primary difference between the Limit/Sort page and the Advanced Search page is: • Your search is refined or limited AFTER getting your search results, whereas with the Advanced Search page, you are refining or limiting your initial search BEFORE getting your search results.

  13. Let’s do some searching! We’ll use ‘Scenaratives’—a Waage-ism • Go to the CLICnet Advanced Searh page. • Do each of the ‘Scenaratives’ below: • Scenarative: "I'm looking for a video on how to increase student motivation" Keyword Search for "student motivation" use the Video Resources Format.
