Biography He was born in Egypt on September 9, 1926. In 1928 his father died, and he moved to his uncle in Qatar. Later on he returned to Egypt, started studying at al-AzharUniversity and got his doctorate degree from there. He was arrested several times by the Egyptian government between 1949 and 1961 for his involvement in the Muslim Brotherhood.
He moved to Qatar in 1961, where he currently resides. Qaradawi has established a worldwide following through television appearances and by utilizing the Internet. He was relatively quick to take the advantages of the Internet and launched a site known as IslamOnline.net and then recently another site titled Onislam.net. He denounced a Danish newspaper's cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad and declared February 3, 2006, an "international day of rage."
Qaradawi is also influential through a wide network of affiliations. In the US, he is the Chairman of the Michigan-based Islamic American University (IAU), a subsidiary of the Muslim American Society (MAS). The University aims to provide Islamic higher education, especially to converts and non-practicing Muslims. Qaradawi is also listed by the IAU as a faculty member. Presently, he is teaching at the University of Qatar.
He is banned from entering US and Britain, as the authorities are afraid that he may influence many people with his speeches. Despite the ban, Qaradawi's message still reaches the Western world through satellite television and the Internet. Many people from around the world were angry when in 2008 the British government did not give him a permission to enter the country for medical treatmenet although he maintained all legal procedures.
He is extremely tolerant to the differences of opinion among Muslim scholars. He clearly defends the right to disagree and claims that Muslims should be tolerant to Muslims with views different from their own. He has so far published more than 42 books on matters concerning religion and various aspects of life.
His works • Qaradawi’s academic style and thought are considered to be the main characteristics of his work. • One of his most famous books is The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam. • Muslims around the world keep a copy of this book for their daily references. • Another book that he wrote, Fiqh al-Zakah, is considered by some as the most comprehensive work in the area of Islamic economics. • Abu al- A’la al-Mawdudi regards this work as “the book of this century in Islamic Jurisprudence”.

The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam(Al-Halal wal-Haram fil Islam) • Qaradawi wrote this book on the request of the General Institute of Islamic Culture of al-Azhar University. • This book is extremely useful for Muslims who live in Europe and America for their better understanding of Halal and Haram in Islam. • It also introduces Islam and attracts the non-Muslims to understand the religion better. • In this book, Qaradawi discusses matters including the Islamic principle pertaining Halal and Haram, the Halal and Haram in the private life of a Muslim, the Islamic manner of slaughtering, hunting, clothing for Muslims and many other matters.
The Status of Women In Islam • This book enlightens people about the importance of women in society and in the family. • Qaradawi says in Introduction that people before us had depressed women a lot by not letting them be free in society. • Women constitute half of society and we should not neglect them, leave them idle, maltreat them or dissolve their rights. • In this book, he talks about woman as a human being, woman as a feminine being, woman as a daughter, wife, and as a member of the wider society. He also discusses issues like divorce and polygamy from an Islamic perspective.
Islamic Awakening between Rejection and Extremism • Qardawi wrote this work to highlight the importance of Islamic awakening to the Muslim youths. • Youths nowadays need to be aware of what happen around them. • He also talks about extremism and argues that "religious extremism is currently in the dock and a target of accusations and criticism by writers and by orators”. • He also states that Islam has been given many names by its opponents from the West or East and Muslims are labeled as “reactionaries”, “die-hard traditionalists,” “bigots”, etc. • In this long essay he also talks about pros and cons of Extremism and details the accusation and the truth, causes of extremism, and provides advice to Muslim youths and prescribes remedies for extremism.
Qaradawi’s Achievements • Qaradawi has been given awards by various countries and institutions for his enormous contributions to Islamic society. • King Faisal International Prize for ISLAMIC STUDIES (1994) • The Islamic Development Bank Prize in Islamic Economics in (1991) • Sultan Al Owais Award for Cultural & Scientific Achievements (1998–1999) • Sultan HassanalBolkiah (Sultan of Brunei) Award for Islamic Jurisprudence (1997) • Dubai International Holy Qur’an Award for Islamic Personality of the Year (2000) • TokohMa'alHijrah (Hijra of the Prophet) award by the Malaysian Government (2009) • The State Acknowledgement Award for contributions in the field of Islamic Studies from the Government of Qatar (2008)
The Qatar University Faculty of Islamic Studies introduced ‘Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradawi Scholarships’ in 2009, awarding them to five post-graduate students each year. • He is a trustee of the Oxford University Centre for Islamic Studies. • A 2008 Foreign Policy poll put him at No.3 in the list of the Top 20 Public Intellectuals worldwide.
CONCLUSION • Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi is a prominent Muslim scholar who has contributed a lot to our understanding of Islam.
