Approaching Potential Sponsors Guide By: GET SMART 3556 Public Relations Team
Dressto Impress • Business attire • Team attire • Decent closed toed shoes • No jeans with holes
Pre-Sponsor Procedures • If possible, call in to the business in order to ensure that the trip is successful. • Shoot for contacting the manager or whomever is in charge of sponsorships/donations. • Go in a team of 2 or 3 people do not overwhelm the sponsor, it only takes a few people to get the point across. • Be prepared, have your sponsorship packets, be knowledgeable about FIRST, your team, and what you do.
Speaking Points • Mention that the donation is tax exempt if applicable. • Mention the sponsorship levels starting from the bottom. List their possible options and describe where their logo will be advertised. If you are wearing a team shirt, show them. • Briefly describe some of your achievements/awards and your current robot 411 so they know what their money is going towards. • Plug your team website and how they can find your team on social networking.
Speaking Points cont. • If they are indecisive, offer to come back, tempt the follow up. Always, get a date for the follow up. If they don’t put up a specific date, offer one. • Come prepared with pictures and/or videos to show the potential sponsor(s) what we do. Tabletsand/or laptops are great tools for this! • Thank them for their time.
Essential Tips for YOU! • Build partnerships. • Groups of no more than two or three! • You represent your entire team, make sure the impression is positive. • Smile genuinely! • Be prepared. • Have an idea, not a script, of what you are going to say. • If a follow-up is requested and not assigned a specific date, offer them a date. • Be sure to record your visits and results so different team members don’t approach the same sponsor. • Make use of contact forms, write down their contact information, file them somewhere safe.
