  2. The Five Themes of Geography – MR. HELP • Geography – study of distribution & interaction of physical and human features on earth

  3. A. LOCATION - Where is it? • Where someone or something is. (Cardinal directions; N,S,E,W) 1. Absolute Location i. Exact place on earth where something is found ii. Given in degrees of latitude and longitude or a street address. • Paris France is 48o N Latitude and 2o E Longitude. • The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. You are Here

  4. 2. Relative Location i. Where something is in relation to something else. ii. Described by landmarks, time, direction or distance. From one place to another. • The United States is north of Mexico.

  5. B. PLACE – What is it like? Describes the unique physical and human characteristics of a location. Ex. Paris – Eiffel Tower, Seine R, French 1. Physical Characteristics – created by nature i. Landforms (mountains, plains, etc.) ii. bodies of water (oceans, lakes, bays, etc.) iii. ecosystems (soil, plants, animals, and climate)

  6. 2. Human Characteristics – man made or human invented • Bridges, roads, buildings, culture, languages, beliefs ii. How many people live, work, and visit a place.

  7. C. HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION – How do people interact with and change the environment? 1. Depend on • rivers for water and transportation. 2. Adapt to • wearing clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and winter (coats), rain and shine. 3. Modify • heating and cooling buildings for comfort.

  8. D. MOVEMENT - How are people and places linked by communication and the flow of people, products, and information/ideas? 1) Movement of humans. 2) Movement of products (goods). 3) Movement of Information/ Ideas • Phones, computers (email), mail, TV, Radio, Magazines

  9. E. REGIONS – How is it similar? 1. Geographers divide the world into regions based on similar characteristics ex. by climate, location, beliefs, language 2. 3 types of regions i. Formal- use cold hard proof, data can be collected, can be proven (ex. United States) ii. Functional- have a use, have a center and the whole world is connected to it (ex. Airport) iii. Perceptual- based on opinion, attitudes (ex. chinatown, where “rich” people live)

  11. Your Homework • On page 17 • Describe your home using the 5 Themes of Geography. • Make sure you use every theme.
