Transformer • A device for increasing/decreasing voltage
Electromagnet • A magnet with a field produced by electric current…usually in the form of a wire coiled around a piece of wire
Magnetic Pole • One of the regions on a magnet that produces a magetic force
Generator • A machine that produces electric current by rotating a coil within a stationary magnetic field
Which is greater? • The gravitational attraction between the scrap iron and Earth or • The magnetic attraction between the magnet and scrap iron? Why?
History • The name "magnet" may come from lodestones (naturally occurring Magnetite) found in Magnesia • Pieces of lodestone, suspended so they could turn, were the first magnetic compasses and their importance to early navigation is indicated by the name lodestone, which means 'leading stone'
Magnetic Poles • Magnets exert forces on each other • Similar to electric charges b/c they can attract or repel without touching • Their strength depends on the distance of separation between the two magnets • If electric charges produce electric forces…magnetic poles produce _______
